Leptospirosis: A Bacterial Infection Transmitted from Animals to Humans
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by Leptospira bacteria, typically transmitted to humans through contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with the urine of infected animals. It is more common in tropical and subtropical regions and often occurs after heavy rainfall or flooding.
There are different forms of leptospirosis based on severity. Mild leptospirosis presents with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, and vomiting. Severe leptospirosis, also known as Weil’s disease, can lead to complications such as jaundice, kidney failure, bleeding, and organ damage. Early diagnosis is important to prevent progression to severe illness.
Leptospirosis stands out due to its zoonotic nature and wide range of symptoms. The bacteria can enter the body through cuts in the skin, mucous membranes, or by ingestion of contaminated water.
